Co-presidents Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo’s government, through a letter sent by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, informed to UNESCO director, Audrey Azoulay, the “unacceptable and inadmissible action of UNESCO against the Nicaraguan State, by granting undeserved recognition to “Diario La Prensa”; which we condemn and reject in the strongest terms.”
“Therefore, the Government of the Republic of Nicaragua, based on Article 2, paragraph 6 of the UNESCO Constitution, informs of its sovereign and firm decision to withdraw from the organization,” concludes the letter, signed by Nicaraguan FM Valdrack Jaentschke.
In the statement, Jaentschke, the mentioned newspaper was qualified like a “vile” traitor of Nicaragua being a medium that “has promoted and supported throughout history, violence, interference, hate crimes, cruelty, anticulture and anti-value.”
The Sandinista government also stressed that “La Prensa” has also been at the service of and promoting and defending US military occupations and interventions and policies in Nicaragua.
In this regard, the letter says it is “deeply shameful” that UNESCO promote and “obviously complicit” in an action which offends the deepest values of Nicaraguan national identity and culture, “losing its objectivity and disqualifying itself.”
Earlier this Sunday, the Nicaraguan executive said in another statement that they reject and condemn before UNESCO “the recognition given to the newspaper La Prensa, which is a diabolical offspring of Nicaraguan antipatria.”
“The newspaper La Prensa represents treason to the fatherland, precisely because it is a medium that has promoted and supported violence, interference, hate crimes, cruelty, anticulture and anti-values throughout its history. A means to serve and promote and defend American military occupations, interventions and policies in Nicaragua”, the statement continued.
For her part, UNESCO’s chairwoman, Azoulay, said she “regret this decision, which will deprive the people of Nicaragua of the benefits of cooperation in areas such as education and culture.”
